In the daily rush we rarely have time for real, absorbing dialogue. When we come home after a hard day, our conversations often resemble a quick exchange of reports or a cool interrogation. Not infrequently we fall into the trap of asking questions in which we smuggle our own opinion or a veiled criticism, which closes the space for a sincere answer in an instant. In an over-stimulated world, giving a partner the luxury of being fully heard without judgment has become the foundation of mature love.

The trap of suggesting an answer and hidden criticism

Most of us do not realize that the way we construct our questions programs the other person's reaction in advance. Closed questions and those with a hidden thesis are in reality a form of camouflaged attack, against which the recipient defends themselves at once. The consistent use of accusatory narrative means that in time invisible walls arise between partners, and the beloved person flees into cool silence. Even seemingly open questions can provoke a block – most often those beginning with the word “why”, because they demand a justification before the story itself has even been told.

Questions about the direct reason almost always create a feeling of being interrogated. Instead of pressing the other person to the wall, it is far safer to use open questions. Such a question cannot be answered in one word, so the other person decides for themselves how far they wish to go – and it is they who steer the course of the conversation.

How to offer the luxury of being heard?

To put effective active listening in a relationship into practice, one must give up imposing one's opinion. Authentic closeness develops where a partner feels safe from hasty judgment. Reaching such a state of maturity requires refraining from giving unasked-for advice, because a close person seeks an unconditional ally. The elimination of distractions is also indispensable, in which a consistent digital detox helps. In addition, the conscious tolerance of silence, which gives space for gathering thoughts, becomes key.

A dignified alibi for the hardest subjects

Being stuck for years in shallow conversational patterns is the dangerous “it will work out” trap. If a sincere exchange of thoughts has long been missing at home, suddenly taking up a deep subject may be received as unnatural and forced. To make this task easier for demanding people, we designed the brand Odoardo Alibi™. This tool lowers tension, giving both partners a pretext for conversation without hedging.

This heavy box of solid oak, closed with magnets, protects 50 deep questions for your partner, which avoid closed forms. The mechanism of matching abstract illustrations activates the meaning of silence and image in communication, which gives comfort to the one answering. Building a zone of safe conversation also requires a suitable setting. The embodiment of this approach are the discreet contextual physical interfaces from the brand Odoardo Soul™ and the rotating collection of Odoardo Art™, described in the text The psychology of changing space. Freeing the domestic space from screens allows attention to be regained.

Why a good conversation begins with a well-asked question we describe in the manifesto.
