Elite encounters with gorillas in the jungles of Uganda, or remarkably refined tented camps set along Kenya's animal migration routes, are a dream from the highest global shelf. Clients endowed with colossal capital (the so-called UHNWI group) traveling from New York or Geneva pay many thousands of dollars for a sense of exclusivity without hesitation. What matters to them is privacy taken seriously and the ability to reserve accommodation without third parties. Despite this pronounced wish to form a bond with the staff, resort owners hand the handling of that traffic to mass booking portals. They lose two things at once: the commission and the first contact with a guest who has paid for privacy in advance.
The invisible tax on luxury
Basing operations on widely used accommodation aggregators (from the OTA sector) is a major mistake among boutique investors. On one hand, tens of thousands of dollars escape, devoured by commission fees on extremely expensive and generous safari bookings. On the other, listing a private camp among budget hotels undermines the property's image. A client of this class is looking for a place that is not in an accommodation search engine – and a long, accidental address suggests they have ended up somewhere else entirely.
Stepping out from under the portals' dictate
A tool for stepping out from under the dictate of external hotel services is forming one's own authority through Odoardo Space™. The system handles a portfolio of elite addresses and does not work like a typical registrar. This digital real estate gives African properties an address under which a wealthy guest can book a stay without an intermediary – a mechanism we describe in the piece The direct-to-consumer model for services.
Attracting the wealthiest travelers is served by addresses in local variants: gorilla.ug for gorilla expeditions and expedition.ug for expedition programs. The resort segment is handled by lodge.ke, lodge.ug and resort.ke. An address this short is easy to remember from a dinner conversation and to type in from memory, with no intermediary along the way.
Financial agility instead of locked-up cash
Setting up and continuously servicing tents hidden in the middle of a vast plain consumes extraordinary capital for firms operating security, catering and a fleet in Africa. Aware of these capital burdens, at Odoardo Space™ we have given up selling addresses. Curated names are made available exclusively under a premium domain rental model.
A fixed fee spreads the cost over time, and what the portal's commission used to take stays with the service of the guest in camp.
The guest experience beyond signal range
A direct booking is the beginning of a relationship, not its end. The material a guest brings back from an expedition can work for the property for years – a mechanism we describe in the piece Curated Guest Content versus UGC, delivered by Odoardo Lens™. Lodge interiors are completed by Odoardo Soul™, described in the piece Animated decks, and evenings without signal by Odoardo Alibi™ from the piece Honeymoon.
This is settled on site, though, in a camp in the middle of the bush. The same address then returns on canvas materials at the base – lodge.ke – on the hats handed out before heading into the field, where expedition.ug appears, and on the commemorative band after the trek, bearing gorilla.ug. The guest goes home with objects carrying the same address as the site where they booked.
Exclusivity begins with the address. Where this conviction comes from is explained in the manifesto. How your category looks today is shown in the Research section.
